What Open Fencing Gives You

Open Fencing is where technique meets another fencer.

Unlike a structured beginner class, these sessions give experienced fencers room to practice, experiment, and apply what they have learned through live bouts.

Practice Bouting

Fence regularly against different partners and gain experience adapting to different speeds, styles, strengths, and tactical approaches.

Distance & Timing

Sharpen your ability to recognize distance, control tempo, choose the right moment to act, and respond more effectively under pressure.

Tactical Development

Test attacks, defensive actions, preparations, combinations, and tactical ideas in situations that cannot be fully reproduced through isolated drills.

Competition Preparation

Use regular bouting to maintain fencing rhythm, identify areas that need improvement, and prepare for upcoming tournaments or competitive goals.

Personal Development

Practice skills from private lessons, structured classes, or individual training and turn technical corrections into actions you can use against an opponent.

Community

Fence with other members, meet visiting fencers, exchange experience, and become part of FAB’s ongoing club environment.

THE FAB CLUB EXPERIENCE

More Than Extra Bouting

Regular fencing development depends on having people to fence.

Open Fencing gives FAB members an environment where they can train beyond formal instruction, face different opponents, practice new ideas, and continue learning through experience on the strip.

FAB supports both foil and saber fencing, bringing together recreational fencers, experienced athletes, returning fencers, and competitors who want consistent opportunities to practice.

For fencers who want additional development, the broader FAB training environment also includes private instruction, footwork training, and coaching that can complement regular Open Fencing.

Come to practice. Find training partners. Challenge yourself. Help other fencers improve. Become part of the club.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Open Fencing?

Open Fencing is practice time for experienced fencers to bout with other fencers outside a structured beginner class.

It gives you an opportunity to apply technique, practice strategy, fence different opponents, and continue developing through live bouting.

Open Fencing and FAB membership are generally intended for experienced fencers ages 15 and older.

Youth fencers under 15 who are not in FAB’s Competitive Program generally do not participate in Open Fencing nights.

Open Fencing is not designed to replace beginner instruction.

Adults and teens ages 15+ who are new to fencing should normally begin with Adult Intro Fencing or private lessons before moving into Open Fencing.

This helps new fencers develop the movement, technique, safety awareness, and bouting fundamentals needed to practice effectively with experienced fencers.

FAB currently supports Foil and Saber Open Fencing.

The current Open Fencing schedule lists:
- Foil: Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:30–10:00 PM
- Saber: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30–10:00 PM

Fencers should review the current schedule or contact FAB before attending, particularly for a first visit.

Contact FAB before your first Open Fencing visit.

This lets the club know you are coming and gives the team an opportunity to confirm the appropriate fencing night and any current requirements before you arrive.

The current Open Fencing Day Pass is $25 per visit.

It is a good option for visiting fencers or experienced fencers who do not need a recurring FAB membership.

Current Monthly Membership is $110 per month.

It is intended for eligible fencers ages 15+ who plan to use Open Fencing regularly.

Current Yearly Membership is $1,000 per year.

The FAB membership year runs from September 1 through August 31.

FAB currently lists a Monthly 4 Classes option for $130 per month, meeting Monday from 8:15–9:15 PM.

Review the current registration form or contact FAB if you are unsure whether this option or regular membership is the better fit for you.

Yes. FAB’s current registration form lists lower member rates for its Footwork Class and private lessons.

For example, current member pricing is $120/month for the Footwork Class, $80 for a 30-minute private lesson, and $140 for a one-hour private lesson.

Yes.

Membership in USA Fencing is required to fence at Fencing Academy of Boston. FAB states that the non-competitive USA Fencing membership is the minimum level for regular club fencing unless your activities require a higher membership level.

Because Open Fencing is intended for experienced fencers rather than introductory students, participants should come prepared for the fencing activity in which they are participating.

If you are visiting FAB for the first time and are unsure about equipment requirements, contact the club before attending.

FAB’s current eligibility guidance makes an exception for qualifying youth in the Competitive Program. Youth fencers under 15 who are not in the Competitive Program generally do not qualify for Open Fencing nights.

Families should follow coach guidance regarding when and how a competitive youth fencer participates.
