THE FAB APPROACH

What You’ll Find Across FAB Programs

Expert Coaching

Learn from experienced fencing professionals who understand how to teach students at different ages and stages of development.

Structured Progression

Programs are designed to help fencers build from fundamentals toward stronger technical, tactical, and competitive skills when appropriate.

Skill Development

Footwork, blade control, distance, timing, coordination, strategy, and decision-making develop progressively through training.

Individual Growth

Fencers develop at different speeds. Coaches consider skill, consistency, readiness, interest, and goals when recommending the next step.

Practice

Fencing skills improve through repetition, drills, lessons, and eventually live bouting against different opponents.

Community

Students train in a club environment built around respect, sportsmanship, shared practice, and helping one another improve.

FROM FIRST CLASS TO YOUR NEXT GOAL

Your Path at FAB

There is no single fencing journey. FAB helps each fencer find the right starting point and continue from there.

01 / Discover

Find the program that matches your age, current fencing experience, and goals.

New fencers can begin with an age-appropriate beginner program, while experienced fencers can enter through the option that matches their current level.

02 / Choose

Review the program details, schedule, tuition, requirements, and progression pathway before registering.

If you are unsure, FAB can help guide you toward the appropriate starting point.

03 / Train

Build skills through structured classes, focused instruction, drills, private coaching, footwork training, and bouting as appropriate for your program.

04 / Progress

Continue recreationally, develop more advanced skills, add individual coaching, join Open Fencing, or move toward competitive training according to your interests and readiness.

ELITE-LEVEL COACHING | CLEAR DEVELOPMENT

Expert Coaching. A Clear Path Forward.

Choosing a fencing program is not only about finding the correct age group. It is about finding the training environment that fits the fencer’s current development and gives them room to grow.

FAB’s coaching team, including Head Coach Vitaliy Nazarenko and Coach Serhiy Shaposhnykov, brings extensive fencing, coaching, athlete-development, and competitive experience to the academy.

From a six-year-old learning basic movement to an adult trying fencing for the first time or a youth athlete preparing for competition, FAB’s goal is to provide the appropriate level of instruction while creating a pathway for continued development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to help you choose the right FAB program.

Which FAB program should my child start with?

Age is an important starting point, but experience and development also matter.

Children ages 6–9 generally begin with Fabbies.

Beginners ages 9–14 generally begin with Youth Beginner.

Youth ages 9–15 who have developed the appropriate foundation and are ready for more intensive training may be evaluated for Competitive Saber.

FAB coaches can help determine the best path if you are unsure.

Yes.

A student does not need to have started fencing at age six to become a competitive fencer. Most new students ages 9–14 begin in Youth Beginner and develop the necessary foundation before moving toward competitive training.

Progression depends on the individual fencer’s skills, consistency, motivation, development, and coach evaluation.

Adults and teens ages 15+ who are new to fencing should generally begin with Adult Intro.

The program teaches foundational fencing skills before the student moves toward Open Fencing or other continued training options.

Open Fencing is practice time for experienced fencers to bout against other fencers outside a structured beginner class.

FAB currently supports Foil and Saber Open Fencing.

Group classes teach students within a structured program alongside other fencers.

Private lessons provide one-on-one coaching focused on the individual fencer’s technique, tactics, corrections, and goals.

Many fencers use both.

Footwork Class is supplemental training for ages 9+ focused specifically on the movement side of fencing.

It can complement Youth Beginner, Competitive training, adult fencing, private lessons, and other regular fencing practice.

FAB provides beginner equipment for introductory programs where indicated.

Experienced fencers and competitive students may need their own equipment as they progress.

Check the individual program page for current requirements.

USA Fencing membership is required for continued fencing participation at FAB. The appropriate membership level depends on the program and whether the fencer participates in sanctioned competition.

Start by reviewing the program page that best fits the fencer.

When ready, continue to the Start Fencing page and the FAB Program Registration Form to review current pricing, schedules, requirements, and payment options.

Not Sure Which Program to Choose?

That is okay. Your best starting point depends on age, fencing experience, current skills, and what you want to get from the sport.

Explore the program pathways above, or use the Start Fencing page to compare current options before registering.
